Music to Your Ears: Building a Spa Playlist

Text by Mina Loyola

Music definitely completes the spa experience. It has the power to calm those raging nerves and soothe the overactive mind, making any massage or spa treatment holistic and much more effective. More importantly, the spa vibe can be replicated almost anywhere–just light some scented candles, dim the lights, and play the appropriate music!

It can be said that there is a consensus on meditation music as spa and massage parlor staples.

“The purpose of background music is to direct the mind elsewhere and cover the sounds of the room or outside,” says therapist Greg Wood of Simsbury Wellness. However, as taste in music varies from one person to another, don’t be afraid to experiment on the music that relaxes you, especially when you try and take home the spa experience.

According to neuropsychiatrist Galina Mindlin, it is important to choose the music you listen to based on your preference. “And then, you have to play and replay the piece and learn that the piece makes you feel calmer. Once you do that and tune into it, you see the effect on your mood and thinking in a matter of days or weeks.”

When all else fails, play a spa playlist on Spotify and put your smartphone on semi-speaker mode. The best way to start is with artist Spa, who has dozens of massage music in relaxing strings and piano on his profile.

We asked around for the music that people would wish to hear in spas, and it’s surprising how taste in relaxation music really varies! Check out this list and take inspiration:
