Dr. Margaret Corcoran – owner and consultant dermatologist at CorDerm Advanced Dermatology and Laser Center – did not dream of becoming a dermatologist while growing up.
Her mom wanted her to become a pediatrician, just like her. But she shared, “Fourth year of medschool, I realized that pedia is not for me because I get a little too antsy and upset when kids cry.”
Ironically, young Margaret grew up facing a lot of skin issues – from skin asthma during childhood to raging acne in her adolescent years. “I have flares every time, really bad even on the face,” she recalled.
No doctor understands the patient better than one who has had the same struggle.
Little had she known that her condition would propel her career and business in dermatology.Corcoran believes her patients entrust their problems to her because she is able to add a personal touch to her products and treatments.
“I have very sensitive skin that’s why all of the products here have been tried and tested by me,” she explained.
No doctor understands the patient better than one who has had the same struggle. Instead of having a doctor who knows the patient’s condition by the book, CorDerm’s patrons found a confidant in Corcoran, who understood their concerns by heart and experience.
Erasing old scars
After literally living with the scars of her past, Corcoran decided to focus on advanced dermatology.
“[CorDerm is] not just the usual skin clinic wherein you have the usual facial. This is for advanced treatments like acne scars, because acne scars are difficult to treat – the old scars, like childhood scars,” the doctor said.
The clinic specializes in laser treatment. One of its best is the SPECTRA Soft Laser Peel and Toning procedure. It is one of the newest non-invasive laser techniques. The treatment is best for moderate to severe acne, acne scars and hyperpigmentation. It also treats normal skin problems such as enlarged pores, aging skin, oily skin and uneven skin tone.
SPECTRA uses a low-level laser that enables the natural peeling of the skin. It also uses carbon lotion to tighten pores, control oil, reduce wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. In treating acne, it reduces the acne-causing bacteria deep down to the pores.
Corcoran is confident in offering these more specialized treatments because of her training in advanced dermatology.
She travelled across borders to specialize in this field. “I felt that I needed more aesthetic training because when I did my residency training in Jose Reyes, it’s more pathologic.”
After being the Chief Resident of the hospital’s Department of Dermatology, she went to the University of San Francisco in California to train further in lasers and dermatologic surgery. She was also with Mountainview Medical Center, still in the same state, to practice dermatologic surgery.
Her journey did not stop there. In 2007, she travelled to Bangkok to specialize inlaser treatment for Asian skin.
All of CorDerm’s aestheticians are also licensed nurses who have been thoroughly trained in their procedures.
Coming back for more
Another thing that sets CorDerm apart from other clinics is their pricing scheme. Corcoran said unlike her competitors, she does not want to offer package treatments.
“We get a lot of feedback from other patients that some clincs encourage package treatments… Even if you are not happy with the results, you’ll be forced to come back because you have already paid for the treatment,” she said.
The doctor said CorDerm’s scheme doesn’t impose unwanted treatments on clients, adding that the clinic is very fortunate that those who are satisfied with their services choose to come back over and over again.
CorDerm Advanced Dermatology and Laser Center is currently operating in Suite 1502, Medical Plaza Makati, Legazpi Village, Makati. But it will soon be in places near you. By September of this year, a branch will be opened in Ortigas. And also in Alabang, by late next year.
